The Luminous Mysteries

Added by Pope Saint John Paul II in 2002, these mysteries illuminate the public ministry of Christ — from His Baptism to the institution of the Eucharist.

I
The Baptism in the Jordan
Jesus is baptised by John. The Holy Spirit descends as a dove and the Father declares: “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” — Matthew 3:13–17
II
The Wedding at Cana
At Mary’s intercession Jesus performs His first miracle, turning water into wine. Mary’s last recorded words: “Do whatever He tells you.” — John 2:1–11
III
Proclamation of the Kingdom
Jesus preaches conversion, heals the sick, forgives sinners, and reveals the face of divine mercy throughout Galilee and Judea. — Mark 1:14–15
IV
The Transfiguration
On Mount Tabor Jesus is transfigured in dazzling light before Peter, James and John. Moses and Elijah appear; the Father speaks from the cloud. — Matthew 17:1–8
V
The Institution of the Eucharist
At the Last Supper Jesus takes bread and wine and gives them as His Body and Blood — the greatest gift, the source and summit of the Christian life. — Luke 22:14–20
Pope John Paul II on the Rosary
“The Rosary is my favourite prayer. A marvellous prayer! Marvellous in its simplicity and its depth.”
He added the Luminous Mysteries in his Apostolic Letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae, October 16, 2002, calling Thursday “the day of the Eucharist.”
He prayed the full Rosary every day of his pontificate, calling it “the school of Mary” and a school of contemplation.

The Sorrowful Mysteries

Walk with Our Lady of Sorrows through the Passion of her Son. These mysteries invite us into the redemptive suffering of Christ and unite our own pain to His.

I
The Agony in the Garden
In Gethsemane Jesus sweats blood in anguish, yet submits in perfect love: “Not my will but Yours be done.” He is betrayed by Judas and arrested. — Luke 22:39–46
II
The Scourging at the Pillar
Jesus is bound and scourged with brutal cruelty. His sacred Body is torn for the healing of our souls. Isaiah foretold: “By His stripes we are healed.” — John 19:1
III
The Crowning with Thorns
Soldiers mock Christ as King, placing a crown of thorns on His head. In accepting this humiliation He crowns us with His love. — Matthew 27:27–31
IV
The Carrying of the Cross
Jesus carries the Cross to Calvary, falling three times. He meets His sorrowful Mother on the Via Dolorosa — their eyes exchanging immeasurable love. — Luke 23:26–32
V
The Crucifixion and Death
Jesus is crucified between two thieves. He forgives His enemies, entrusts Mary to John and all disciples, and surrenders His spirit. “It is finished.” — John 19:17–30
Our Lady of Fatima’s Request
After each decade: “O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to heaven, especially those most in need of Thy mercy.” — Fatima Prayer, 1917
Our Lady appeared at Fatima holding a Rosary and asked the children to pray it daily “to obtain peace in the world and the end of the war.”
The Rosary was called “the weapon” against evil by Saint Padre Pio, who prayed up to 35 decades daily.

The Glorious Mysteries

Contemplate the triumph of Christ over death and Mary’s exaltation in glory — the promise of resurrection that awaits all who follow her Son.

I
The Resurrection

Forty days after the Resurrection, Jesus ascends to the right hand of the Father, commissioning the Apostles: “Go and make disciples of all nations.” — Acts 1:9–11
III
The Descent of the Holy Spirit
At Pentecost the Holy Spirit descends as tongues of fire upon Mary and the Apostles gathered in prayer. The Church is born into the world. — Acts 2:1–4
IV
The Assumption of Mary
At the end of her earthly life Mary is assumed body and soul into heavenly glory — a dogma solemnly defined by Pope Pius XII on November 1, 1950. — Revelation 12:1
V
The Coronation of Mary
Mary is crowned Queen of Heaven and Earth, Mediatrix of all graces and Mother of the Church. She reigns and intercedes for all her children until the end of time. — Revelation 12:1
Why Pray the Rosary?
15 successive popes have called the Rosary the most powerful prayer after the Mass itself.
At Fatima, Lourdes and Medjugorje, Our Lady specifically asked for the daily Rosary as the path to world peace.
Saint Louis de Montfort: “The Rosary is the most excellent form of prayer and the most efficacious means of attaining eternal life.”
One full Rosary takes about 20 minutes — an ancient rhythm of prayer still transforming lives across the world today.
